Alabaster Photos is an APNPI Safety-Certified newborn photographer in New Richmond, Wisconsin, and a wide-awake baby is never a problem — we simply shift to awake, wrapped, and parent-and-baby photos.
This is one of the questions I hear most from expecting parents, and I want to put your mind at ease: it’s completely normal, and it does not mean your session will be a disaster.
Sessions are scheduled for two to four hours specifically because of this. That time isn’t there because there’s a lot to “do” — it’s there so we can go entirely at your baby’s pace. If baby is wide awake, we feed, soothe, and take breaks for as long as needed. Babies often settle once they’re warm, fed, and held in a familiar wrap or pose, even if they started out fussy.
And if baby stays alert for part of the session, that’s not a problem either — awake newborn images, especially eyes-open portraits with parents, are some of the most treasured photos families walk away with. There’s no single “right” way for a newborn session to go, and I never rush or force a pose for the sake of getting a shot.
The goal is always a calm, unhurried experience for you and your baby, not a checklist to get through. If you’re nervous about how your baby will do, that’s a completely normal thing to feel — and it’s exactly why the time and pacing of a studio session are built the way they are.
