Alabaster Photos offers both studio newborn sessions at The Croix Studio in New Richmond, Wisconsin and Fresh 48 hospital sessions — here is how to decide which is right for your family.
Both styles of newborn photography capture something real and meaningful — they’re just built for different moments and different priorities.
This happens within the first 24 to 48 hours of life, right in the hospital room. It captures the very first hours — tiny hospital bracelets, the hospital bassinet, that just-met-you newness. The tradeoff is that sessions are shaped around whatever lighting, space, and time the hospital setting allows, and visits are often brief.
This happens later, typically 5 to 14 days after birth, in a dedicated studio space built specifically for newborn sessions. That means controlled lighting and temperature, a wider range of posing setups, wraps, and backdrops, and — maybe most importantly — time. A studio session runs two to four hours, giving plenty of room for feeding, soothing, and settling in at baby’s own pace, without the constraints of a hospital schedule.
If your priority is capturing the literal first hours of life, hospital photography is the only way to do that. If your priority is a relaxed, unhurried session with more variety, comfort, and creative options, a studio session is generally the better fit — which is why studio newborn sessions are what I focus on today.
