If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought:
I’m failing.
I’m not enough.
I’m too much.
I’m behind.
I’m invisible.
You are not alone.
As a motherhood and newborn photographer serving families through Alabaster Photos in the St. Croix Valley, I spend so much time documenting beautiful moments between parents and children. But behind so many of those smiles are women quietly carrying heavy thoughts about themselves.
Thoughts they rarely say out loud.
And honestly? I’ve carried many of them too.

Sometimes the thoughts sound like this:
These thoughts can grow louder during motherhood, marriage changes, entrepreneurship, healing from trauma, religious deconstruction, body changes, burnout, or simply trying to rediscover yourself after years of surviving instead of truly living.
For many women, especially mothers, identity becomes complicated.
We spend years caring for everyone else while quietly disconnecting from ourselves.

Because photography is never really just about photos.
At Alabaster Photos, I photograph newborns, maternity sessions, motherhood, and growing families throughout places like New Richmond, Hudson, Baldwin, River Falls, and the greater St. Croix Valley.
And one thing I’ve learned is this:
Women often arrive at sessions believing they need to apologize for themselves first.
They apologize for:

But what I see through my lens is usually something entirely different.
I see tenderness.
Strength.
Connection.
Survival.
Love.
Beauty that exists long before perfection ever enters the room.

One of the hardest parts about healing is realizing how deeply negative beliefs can root themselves into identity.
At some point, many of us stopped saying:
“I feel overwhelmed.”
And started saying:
“I am overwhelming.”
We stopped saying:
“I made mistakes.”
And started believing:
“I am a mistake.”
That shift changes everything.
It affects relationships, confidence, creativity, business decisions, parenting, and even our ability to be present in our own lives.
As a photographer and business owner in New Richmond, I’ve battled thoughts telling me:
And yet… I keep creating anyway.
Not because fear disappears.
But because healing sometimes looks like continuing despite the fear.

Motherhood has a way of exposing every hidden belief you carry.
It can bring overwhelming joy while also forcing you to confront:
But it can also become the beginning of rediscovering who you actually are.
For me, photography became part of that rediscovery.
Documenting mothers with their babies reminds me constantly that people deserve to exist in photographs before they feel fully healed, fully confident, or fully “put together.”
Your story matters now.
Not ten pounds from now.
Not after life feels easier.
Not once you become a different version of yourself.
Now.

If you are carrying words like:
I hope you know those thoughts are not the full truth of who you are.
Sometimes they are old survival stories.
And survival stories can be rewritten.
At Alabaster Photos, my goal has never been to create perfect images.
It’s to create honest ones.
The kind your children will look back on someday and see:
