If the thought of standing in front of a camera while pregnant makes you cringe a little… you’re not alone.
Maybe you’re picturing swollen feet, that one dress that used to fit just right, or a partner who isn’t a fan of photos either. Maybe there’s a gentle voice in your head whispering “wait until you feel more like yourself” or “just skip this one and try again next time.”
I hear those thoughts often.
I once photographed a mother pregnant with twins. She came to her session unsure and quiet, folding her hands over a belly that felt much bigger than she ever expected. She said she wasn’t used to seeing herself looking this way – like her body belonged to someone else. She thought she only wanted a few shots. One dress. Something simple. But as the hour unfolded, she softened. She smiled. She moved with a new kind of presence – slow, steady, grounded. And by the end, she stood in front of the lens not just to mark this season, but to honor it.
Because that’s what maternity photography is really about.

You don’t have to love every part of pregnancy to cherish what it represents. In fact, many mothers don’t feel outwardly “radiant” during this season. They feel stretched, uncomfortable, and vulnerable.
But the truth is, the camera isn’t just about what you look like. It’s about witnessing something real.
I know that in the Midwest, many women are raised not to “make too much fuss” or put themselves in the spotlight. In a culture of practicality, maternity sessions can feel like a luxury instead of a necessity.
But here’s the thing: this season matters.
Your body is changing – and with it, your mind and heart are changing too. It’s not about vanity. It’s about memory. About freezing a quiet Saturday or a softly lit room, the way your hands cradle your growing belly, how your partner looks at you when you aren’t looking back.
When we let go of the pressure to perform, we make space for something far more beautiful: presence.

You won’t be expected to “know what to do.” I’ll guide you through natural, gentle poses that prioritize comfort and feeling supported – not forced. We take our time. Sometimes there’s just one outfit. Often we start sitting down, ease into movement, and choose soft, flattering angles that feel effortless. The only rule? You are already enough.
Long before the camera comes out, I send custom preparation tips to help reduce stress. Outfit guidance, timing, what to expect – it’s all easy and calming. I remind you it’s okay to show up as you are. Tired, unsure, a little nervous. That’s normal. We don’t need perfection. We need real moments.
During the session, we talk about how you’re preparing. What baby apps you’re scrolling through at 2 a.m., the well-meaning (and ridiculous) advice you’ve received, which series you’ll binge when those long, sleepy nursing nights arrive. It’s conversation, not a performance. Along the way, I watch for honest expressions between you and your partner – the quiet laughs, the glances, the softness. That’s where the art lives.
So many first-time moms have only heard dramatized birth stories – the scary ones. During your session, I’ll often share pieces of my own birth experiences, which were grounded, uneventful, and deeply meaningful. Because sometimes, hearing that it can be safe, smooth, and sacred changes how you feel about what’s ahead. That confidence shapes the way you show up in your photos, too.

Even if you’re camera-shy. Even if your bump feels awkward. Even if you’ve never taken professional photos before.
Especially then.
Because in a few months, you’ll hold that baby in your arms, and time will lose its edges. You’ll forget what it felt like to carry the weight just under your ribs, the way your home sounded before their cry. And when they’re bigger still – toddling through your living room, or asking what you looked like while pregnant with them – these images will matter even more.
Maternity photography isn’t about vanity. It’s about memory, presence, and legacy.
And it’s my joy to make sure you feel safe and honored throughout.
