Misconceptions Around A Doula | Stillwater, Minnesota

The first time I ever heard about doulas, I’ll admit—I thought it was strange. I couldn’t really understand the need for one. Why would I need a doula when I had an amazing doctor I loved and trusted? Especially since I was planning on getting the epidural, which seemed like it would take care of most of the pain. I was so sure that I had everything under control. Would I benefit from a doula? Why hadn’t I even heard the word doula?

Oh, how I wish I could go back and have a conversation with my younger self. I would go back an interview several doulas and see how they could. I KNOW so many of my questions would have answered and I would have been so much more prepared.

Little did I know, having a doula would have made all the difference for me. In fact, studies show that having a doula can decrease the risk of a Cesarean by 25%, and decrease the risk of being dissatisfied with your birth experience by 31%. That’s huge!

But why are doulas so impactful?

A doula’s role is not to replace your doctor or midwife, but to support you and your partner throughout the birthing process. They offer emotional support, physical comfort (through things like massage or positioning suggestions), and continuous care during labor—something that even the most amazing doctors can’t always provide given their busy schedules. They advocate for your birth plan, helping you navigate any challenges or changes that arise.

For someone like me, who had no idea what to expect, a doula could have made the entire experience so much smoother. I would have felt more prepared, empowered, and supported. They also help you in your parenting journey long after you give birth!

So, will you have a doula at your birth? Are you looking for doula recommendations? Even if you’re planning on using pain relief options like an epidural, the support and care they provide are invaluable. It’s all about making sure you feel comfortable, informed, and heard in one of the most important moments of your life.
