TL;DR:

One of the most common questions I hear as a newborn and family photographer is:
“How much does professional photography cost?”
The short answer is: it depends.
Professional photography can range anywhere from $100 to well over $1,000, depending on the photographer, their experience, what is included, and the type of session you’re booking.
But I think the better question is:
What are you really paying for?
As someone who specializes in newborn and family photography, I want to give you an honest answer from both a photographer’s perspective and a mom’s perspective.

In my area, most professional photographers charge somewhere between $400 and $1,200 for a session.
That price can vary depending on:
Not every photographer structures pricing the same way, which is why comparing photographers based solely on price can sometimes be misleading.
The answer is simple:
You’re not comparing identical services.
Some photographers are hobbyists. Some are full-time professionals. Some are just beginning their journey, while others have spent years investing in education, equipment, safety training, and refining their craft.
Professional photography involves much more than showing up with a camera.
There are hours spent:
None of those things is visible when you’re only looking at a number.

Before becoming a full-time photographer, I spent nearly five years as a stay-at-home mom.
Living on one income taught me a lot about priorities and budgeting. I understand what it’s like to carefully think through every purchase and decide what matters most for your family.
Because of that experience, I intentionally chose to build my business differently.
I’m an all-inclusive photographer because I want families to have the freedom to print their images however they choose. I want beautiful memories to be accessible without feeling overwhelming.
More than anything, I want to become your forever family photographer.
I don’t want to photograph your newborn once and never see you again.
I want to celebrate your growing family with you year after year.
When families book me, I hope they’re not just investing in images.
They’re investing in peace of mind.
As a mom of two girls myself, I understand:
I know that children aren’t always predictable, and honestly, that’s okay.
My goal is to make families feel comfortable instead of stressed.
I want parents to know:
“I’ve got you.”
You don’t need to worry about forcing perfect smiles or wondering whether your children are behaving “well enough.”
I know what I’m doing. I know how to work efficiently. I know how to adapt.
And I never stop investing in improving my craft.

Some of my favorite clients started with me years ago when I was rebuilding my photography business after staying home with my children.
Several originally came to me as model families.
Today, I’ve photographed their growing families multiple times. I’ve documented newborns who are now toddlers and families that have welcomed additional children.
The greatest compliment they’ve given me is this:
“We keep coming back because we trust you.”

Sometimes I hear people say:
“I’m just looking for someone who doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.”
I completely understand wanting to stay within a budget.
But that statement often tells me families haven’t been given enough information to understand the differences between photographers.
Many people don’t know what questions to ask.
Instead of asking only about price, I encourage families to ask:
This is especially important for newborn photography.
Many photographers who are just beginning may have limited experience around babies or very little formal newborn safety education.
That doesn’t make them bad photographers.
Everyone starts somewhere.
But newborn safety should always be a priority.
Posing, supporting babies properly, understanding infant behavior, and recognizing when a baby needs a break are all important parts of a safe newborn session.
As parents, you deserve to know that your baby is in experienced hands.
Also, check out APNPI, which has certified me in Newborn Safety Photography, and their information for parents when searching for a newborn photographer.

If a friend asked me this question, I would tell them to plan for somewhere between $400 and $1,200.
Then I would ask them a few questions.
Do you want:
Years from now, your photographs won’t simply be files on your computer.
They’ll become reminders of tiny fingers, sleepy newborn stretches, missing teeth, and growing families.
Those moments disappear quickly.
My hope is not that every family spends the most money.
I hope that every family finds a photographer whose experience, personality, safety practices, and style align with what matters most to them.
Because at the end of the day, photography isn’t really about pictures.
It’s about preserving the people you love most.
