What to Wear in Your Photo Session

Top tips for getting the most out of your professional photography session

If you are prepping for your photo session you probably have a couple of questions about what to expect. A common concern for people having their photos taken is what to wear during their photo session. Firstly, what is the purpose of the photoshoot? This should be your first thought when deciding what to wear. Choose an appropriate outfit for the occasion and something that suits your personality. Secondly, where is the photoshoot taking place? Choose an outfit that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident. For example, if you’re on a beach, those new high heels might not be the most logical choice and you might end up looking a bit out of place.

Choose complimentary colors

A good place to start in choosing colors for your outfits is to choose a color palette that has colors that complement one another, rather than too many of the same or similar colors. It’s also important to make sure colors don’t clash.

Go neutral in your clothing choices

I highly recommend choosing outfits that follow a more neutral color palette when you are thinking about what to wear to your photo session. Especially when your session is at a location in nature, it’s great to have Earthy colors that compliment, yet pop against the backdrop. Neutral colors are also a great way to make sure your images are timeless and beautiful.

Limit patterns and big logos when considering what to wear to your photo session

When selecting outfits, prioritize simplicity. Busy patterns and large logos can be overly distracting, particularly if many in your group wear patterns, leading to clashes. Opt for predominantly solid colors, reserving patterns for instances when others wear solids, and ensuring they aren’t overpowering. While using patterns or prints is fine, use them sparingly and pair with solids. In family photos, consider having two members in prints and two in solids. Experiment with colors to match the shoot’s mood. Avoid excessive branding; it can make you seem like a walking advertisement. Similarly, avoid large graphics, which can dominate the photo. Ultimately, choose outfits that enhance, not overshadow, the shoot’s focus.

Family Photographer Clothing Guide

Start with mom’s outfit

Women’s clothing comes in a multitude of designs, colors, and styles, and most times, women are more particular with their clothing than men, so having this as a foundation for the other outfits makes it easier to choose a color palette and style for your outfits. When considering what to wear to your photo session start with one outfit, and build on it one by one. Fit is more important than you think. If you already have an outfit in mind for your shoot, try it on before the time to make sure that it fits correctly and compliments your body type.

Confidence is key when deciding what to wear to your photo session

The most important factor in choosing your outfits is to wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Make your photos timeless. You might love that trendy top or pair of pants now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing? You’ll want to choose something that fits you well and makes you feel good about yourself!
