As a baby led photographer, I am HUGE believer in natural newborn posing that allows baby to baby. I want your images to focus on the amazingness of your newest addition to your family.
Babies are not tacos.
So they probably shouldn’t be posed like one.
Babies are also not frogs.
So maybe putting them into a “froggy pose” is a bad idea.
Babies are not props.
They are tiny humans.
And they need to be treated with care.
That is precisely why I stay away from using complicated, potentially unsafe, poses in my newborn photography.
Instead, I practice a more natural approach.
What is Natural Newborn Posing?
This is a safe method of posing that relies on positions that are natural and comfortable for newborns to be in.
In this style, newborns are placed on their stomach, their sides, their backs or in their parents arms. I intentionally stay away from stylized poses such as “Froggie” or “Taco”.
Because those poses require specialized training and I believe that if a photographer must be trained to avoid injuring a baby, maybe we should just stay away from those poses all together.
Baby led posing is safe and comfortable for the baby. And it results in timeless images that will never look dated. Looking for more examples of natural poses for your newborn photography sessions? Check out my portfolio here.
