Congratulations on becoming a new mom! This is an incredible journey filled with love, joy, and undoubtedly a few sleepless nights. As you embark on this adventure, here are five important facts to help guide you through this wonderful yet sometimes overwhelming experience from a veteran mom of two beautiful girls.

Sleep is essential for both you and your baby

Sleep deprivation is common for new moms, but it’s crucial to prioritize rest whenever possible. Adequate sleep will not only help you recover from childbirth but also support your emotional well-being and ability to care for your baby. Consider asking for help from your partner or other family members to get enough rest. Ask friends to let you rest when they visit. Have uncles or aunts take older children out of the house for bits at a time to allow you and the baby to rest. It will be hard. You are going to be tired. Please know when to ask for help.

Breastfeeding is a learning process

Breastfeeding can be challenging at first, but it’s a learned skill for both you and your baby. Seek help from lactation consultants or nursing support groups if you encounter difficulties. Remember that every baby is different, and it may take time to establish a successful breastfeeding routine. Ultimately fed is fed so if you need to explore other options that is ok. I am a woman who simply could not produce enough to feed my babies. I felt such shame around this and didn’t need to.

Trust your instincts as a new mom

As a new mom, you’ll receive advice from many well-meaning people, but remember that you know your baby best. Trust your instincts and develop your parenting style. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reach out to a pediatrician for guidance.

Self-care is essential as a new mom

Taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your baby. Ensure you eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and find time for light exercises. Consider seeking emotional support from friends, family, or support groups. Taking care of your well-being will positively impact your ability to care for your baby. A shower can do wonders when you are up for it.

Babies develop at their own pace

Every baby is unique and will reach milestones at different rates. Avoid comparing your child’s development with others and instead focus on their progress. If you have concerns about your baby’s development, consult with a pediatrician who can offer appropriate guidance and reassurance.

Remember, being a new mom can be both exciting and challenging. Give yourself time to adjust and remember that no one is perfect. Embrace the journey and cherish the special moments with your little one.
